Jerry Traunfeld, chef and herbman extraordinaire at the Seattle-area restaurant called The Herb Farm, was the star of my evening at Pike Place Market.
I’m in Seattle for the International Association of Culinary Professionals’ annual conference, and last night was the host city’s welcoming reception. Pike Place Market, usually quite still at night, was transformed into a late-nite Seattle food fair for 1500 foodies, with each of maybe 25 area restaurants pushing their best eats at little booths. It was a bit of a mental test for the claustrophobic, it more than a little overwhelming.
My favorite bite, hands down, was Jerry’s cinnamon-basil ice cream. Though he typically makes it with cinnamon basil (a type of basil with strong cinnamon notes), this particular (out-of-season) version was made with a simple mix of basil- and cinnamon-infused cream. A must-try.
